学中文的你一样可以申请TESOL

  美国TESOL专业是“Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages”的缩写,中文翻译是“对外英语教学”。TESOL专业的教学对象英语非母语国家的人群。TESOL证书作为一项国际英语教师的职业资格证书,已经被国际上80多个国家的5000多所学校认可,并在全世界拥有近百个团体会员和14000多名专业人士。在北美、英国、澳大利亚、新西兰等英语国家,大部分学校和语言培训机构都认可TESOL证书。目前,已经有包括中国在内的80多个国家和地区开设了TESOL课程。这类专业故名思议就是Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages,主要学习的会是包括英语教学方式,方法,文化区别以及语言架构等之类课程。

        接下来展示一篇跨专业申请者个人陈述。虽然申请人在校期间并非英语专业,但出色的个人陈述为申请TESOL专业增色不少。

  Personal Statement

  “Hello, welcome to Beijing!” In 2008 during the Beijing Olympic Games, all foreign visitors would be greeted in English like this by senior citizens, taxi drivers, and countless volunteers. English as a language that is used worldwide has been a major way to connect people of different culture and from every corner of the world to come together. During the recent decade, the learning of English in China has become ever so popular among average citizens. As for me, a college graduate majoring in Chinese Language & Literature, I am desired to combine the learning and teaching experience of both Chinese and English, which are seemingly two irrelevant languages, so that I could develop a more efficient and more suitable way for Chinese to better their English learning. Such a career goal has served as impetus to my pursuit for TESOL in the United States.

  In my undergraduate years, I did outstandingly well in my major studies. I have never limited my vision on the learning of Chinese, but I paid much more attention to the teaching of Chinese. I always kept an eye on the teaching methods of my professors, and how did they communicate with students to keep prompt teaching progress. My observation of Chinese learning and teaching evoked my consideration and reflection on the learning of English. I still remember how my high school and middle school English teachers taught me. Due to the huge pressure and burden of college entrance examination, English teachers in China are likely to focus their full attention on students’ ability to English listening, reading, and writing. But they forget the fact that English as a language should be used as a communication tool, and a carrier of thoughts. It makes no sense if a kid could write excellent English, but could hardly speak out a complete sentence with standard pronunciation. In order to find the exact solution for better English learning, I involved myself to varied English learning and teaching activities during the past four years.

  In 2008, I participated in a charity program aiming at providing academic support to high school students in rural area. I signed up as a volunteer English teacher without any hesitation. A sense of sympathy and sorrow stirred up when I saw the humble school house with old and shabby desks at the first sight. The students varied from the age of 4 to 18 at different knowledge level. According to the situation, I introduced some interesting stories and funny games in teaching to stimulate their interest toward English. Sometimes, I would encourage them to put on short English plays, which not only helped them to practice English, but also helped build up their confidence. From the actual teaching practice, I got exposed to the required qualities for a capable English teacher: patience, creativity and responsibility.

  Last year, I had another opportunity to work as English teacher, but this time my students became adults. I interned in Customer Service Center of a property company in Shenzhen, where I took charge of English training for staff to enhance their communication capability with foreigners. Although they could read and write English emails, they could hardly express themselves and present the advantages of their products and company. Under such circumstances, I designed a meticulous plan to improve their oral English. Firstly, I asked every one to do a speaking test to get a good idea about their level and problems, which would be of great help for class arrangement. Secondly, I used the English teaching methods I concluded according to my own experience and the methods I borrowed from learning of Chinese, to design my class and to encourage them to speak English loudly and confidently. Thirdly, I designed some interesting cartons involved with cultural background to stimulate their English study interest. Besides, I created ample opportunity for each one of them to practice frequently. Through continuous trainings and endeavors, their English had improved greatly. When the opening day came, I was very pleased when they could speak to foreigners with fluent English and excellent communication skills.

  While teaching these two different groups of people, I felt the deficiencies in the English education in China: the lack of learning resources and the unsound teaching method. It was a common phenomenon that students with years of English learning experience were not able to speak English. Among them, even a large number of students were capable of gaining high marks in English test. I couldn’t help sinking into serious thinking about such matter: what can I do to change such embarrassing situation and help them to get rid of the predicament of “dumb English”。 Thus, I want to further my graduate education on TESOL in America. I am firmly convinced that just like China is the best place to learn Chinese, the United States is definitely an ideal place for me to explore teaching methods and experience for English. After the upcoming two years of graduate study in TESOL, I want to come back to China and work in educational institutions, trying my utmost to help Chinese students learn genuine English. I believe a learning opportunity in the United States could pave the way for the achievement of my goals.
